When you decided to have your own swimming pool, you made a valuable investment in your own health and wellness. Having a swimming pool is like having a relaxing oasis, low impact workout, and fun outlet right in your own backyard. But this amazing addition to your home does require maintenance and upkeep. And if you have your pool long enough, you might experience what no pool owner ever wants to: a pool leak. Ideally, your routine maintenance means that you catch a leak early before it becomes a major problem. If you do have a leak, reach out to a pool service professional quickly. And in the meantime, keep these tips in mind to rule out other issues.
Could It Be Evaporation?
Depending on the area you live in, evaporation can actually account for up to two inches of water loss every week. So if you’ve had a particularly hot and dry spell, if you haven’t had the normal amount of rain, or if your pool has a lot of direct sun exposure, that noticeable drop in water could actually just be evaporation. You can run your own experiment to rule out evaporation but filling a bucket with pool water and leaving it on a step so that the water level in the bucket is even with the pool level around the bucket (mark the levels on the inside and outside of the bucket). If the water evaporates from both at the same rate, that is likely your culprit. If the pool loses water faster, then you may have a leak.
Could It Be Plumbing Issues?
If you figure out that the issue is not evaporation, it is time to look for other causes. If your pool was professionally installed and is not excessively old, a leak is less likely. Leaks are usually accompanied by water pooling, excess algae growth in and around the pool, and other visible damage. If you don’t see any signs, consider having a plumber come out and check all of the pool plumbing to make sure that it isn’t leaking there.
