Pool shocking is an important part of maintaining your swimming pool. It’s a procedure that should be done once per week if you’re using your pool on a regular basis. For those not familiar with the procedure, pool shocking involves chlorinating your pool water in order to eliminate germs and algae that might be developing. It keeps the water safe for swimming, and it’s needed for any swimming pool people may own. Today, we’ll be reviewing the different steps that go into pool shocking.
Test Your Pool Water
In order to know how to care for your swimming pool, it’s important to test the current condition of the water. Assess the water’s current pH level, and make sure you have a water testing kit on hand because it is a vital tool for maintaining any swimming pool.
Determine How Much Chlorine Your Pool Needs
When conducting pool shocking, the amount of chlorine you need will depend on how big your pool is, and the type of shocking product you use. You should have manufacturer instructions going over how to use whatever shocking product you procured.
Activate Your Pool Pump
Your pool pump needs to be running during pool shocking. Even after shocking has been completed, you’ll want your pump running for an additional six hours.
Apply the Chlorine to Your Pool’s Perimeter
When you’re ready to add chlorine to your pool water, make sure the chlorine is poured along the perimeter of your pool and not in the middle.
Re-Test Your Pool Water
Your shock product label will tell you how much time should pass before testing your pool water again after shocking. Once enough time has passed, test your pool water again, and be sure your water’s chlorine levels are sufficient for allowing people to safely swim in the pool.
